Thierry Charbonnel

Thierry Charbonnel is a multidisciplinary designer based in New York (USA). After working as an Art Director for the advertising agency RSGP, he created autre planete design studio, a practice focused on the meeting point between design and technology.

Over more than three decades at the intersection of design and code, he has worked across many roles — from art direction and UX strategy to front-end leadership, design technology, product design, and design systems architecture.

He leads multidisciplinary teams in both large organizations and small, nimble studios, with a strong focus on aligning people, tools, and purpose. His work often centers on building and scaling design systems, mentoring cross-functional teams, and contributing to open-source libraries.

Today, he serves as Lead UX & AI Design Technologist at BPCE Group. His toolkit spans Figma and Glyphs through to the command line and production code, and his work ranges from shipping mobile and web apps used by millions to experimenting with variable fonts and immersive, interactive storytelling.

Alongside client and product work, Thierry contributes to the design tooling ecosystem by creating plugins (notably for Figma and Sketch) and exploring open-source alternatives like Penpot to streamline and empower design workflows. Outside the studio, you’ll often find him experimenting with plotter machines and generative tools to turn algorithms into ink and images.
